It is especially crucial that navigational safety is never compromised in our busy port. We have about 2 to 3 ships arriving or leaving Singapore every minute and about 1,000 vessels in the port at any one time. We have therefore invested heavily in sophisticated systems, including our Vessel Traffic Information System (VTIS) to monitor every vessel movement in our waters.

We work in close collaboration with our neighbours, major user States and the shipping industry through the Co-operative Mechanism on Safety of Navigation and Environmental Protection of the Straits of Malacca and Singapore. We have also established the Regional Cooperation Agreement Against Piracy and Armed Robbery Against Ships in Asia (ReCAAP). The ReCAAP information sharing centre has been set up in Singapore to facilitate communication, conduct analysis and support capacity-building efforts towards this end.
