Singapore is one of the most densely populated countries in the world. Like other urban cities, Singapore faces the challenges of meeting the growing travel demands to support the economy and the needs of its citizens against the constraints of physical space. Overlooking any factor would lead to immense traffic congestion.

Vision

Our vision is to work towards a more people-centered land transport system that will meet the diverse needs of an inclusive, livable and vibrant global city.

Policy Strategies

One of the main thrusts of our transport strategies is to make a public transport a choice mode, a viable alternative to the car. We aim to provide a quality public transport system to support the growth of travel demand in future. This includes expanding our rail network, improving the quality of bus services and making sure that the whole system is well integrated, while ensuring that the system is financially sustainable.

Another of our strategy is to optimise the road network and manage road use. Apart from increasing the capacity of the road network, we have put in place vehicle ownership policies to keep the car population at levels supportable by road infrastructure development, and have introduced congestion charging, to better manage congestion along the heavy corridors.

Thirdly, we seek to provide for the diverse needs of our society and contribute to a quality, liveable environment. This includes implementing initiatives that will provide better access for various diverse groups such as the elderly, wheelchair users and families with young children.
