 Enhancing Public Transport

Public transport is by far the most efficient mode of transport, both in terms of land and energy use. A single-deck bus carries up to 80 passengers while an average passenger car only carries up to 5 persons. A car carrying only the driver uses 9 times the energy used by a bus and 12 times that used by a train. Thus, promoting the use of public transport and enhancing the infrastructure are keys to ensuring that the transport sector remains sustainable in the long term, and to achieving our target modal share of 70 per cent of journeys made during morning peak hours via public transport by 2020.
