It is especially crucial that navigational safety is never compromised in our busy port. We have about 2 to 3 ships arriving or leaving Singapore every minute and about 1,000 vessels in the port at any one time. We invest heavily in sophisticated systems, including our Port Operations Control Centres (POCCs) and Vessel Traffic Information System (VTIS), to monitor every vessel movement in our waters.

We also work in close collaboration with our neighbours to address piracy and armed robbery against ships in the Straits of Malacca and Singapore (SOMS), through joint air and sea patrols. Together with other countries, we have established the Regional Cooperation Agreement Against Piracy and Armed Robbery Against Ships in Asia (ReCAAP) to promote and enhance cooperation against piracy and armed robbery in Asia. A ReCAAP information sharing centre has been set up in Singapore to facilitate communication, conduct analysis and support capacity-building efforts to combat piracy and armed robbery against ships.
